Knife and tomahawk-throwing, bullwhips, and fire-spinning!

This is a carnie-arts afternoon extraordinaire! Tucked away in the Philly burbs is a gem of a teacher, who is excited to instruct all of us in the ancient arts of knife- and ax-throwing!

And while we're at it, he'll show us how to crack a few bullwhips, too, and the ladies of Philadelphia Fire Arts will introduce us to their love affair with all things flaming!

Knives & Tomahawks
Accomplished knife-maker Joe began throwing knives at the age of five under the tuition of his father, an ex-Ranger. At 19 he was hired by a traveling circus as a knife-thrower and bullwhip artist. He later became a highly successful tournament thrower.

Joe is an 8-time World Champion, 34-time National Champion and 3-time Blade Show Tournament of Champions Winner, as well as a recipient of the Silver Life Achievement Award from the International Knife Throwers Hall of Fame, into which he's been inducted 3 different times in 3 different categories.

As of October 2009, Joe ranked #12 in the world. This is some serious skill, here.

We're heading out to Joe's custom tournament grounds, where he has built a few regulation-standard knife- and ax-throwing targets. He and one or two of his most accomplished students will teach us the ins and outs of throwing handmade, carbon steel throwing knives and the more elaborate tomahawks, and then we'll basically practice until our arms fall off.

Bullwhips
When you need a break from the blades, you'll be able to go have your own Indiana Jones moment at Joe's bullwhip station, where he will personally coach you into breaking the sound barrier with one of his custom leather bullwhips. It is harder than you think, and just as awesome as you imagine!

Fire-spinning
Meanwhile, you'll get a taste of spinning all sorts of things that burn! Our intrepid flame maven Lauren, who's been playing with fire professionally with the Philadelphia Fire Arts and her own groups for years, will take a break from her rigorous performance schedule to give us a firm grounding in the exciting world of flame arts.

While we won't actually be handling lit tools, we'll learn the basics of fire-spinning technique, safety, and instruments. We'll get tons of (unlit) hands-on practice with her array of equipment, from traditional ball-and-chain (poi) to metal fans and more. This is the introductory class that teaches you everything you need to know to get into the art, so if you want to someday light a hulahoop on fire and spin it around your waist without disaster, this is your first step!

At sunset, Lauren will be treating us to one of her beautiful performances, so we'll end the day with a bit of dazzle.

Come ready to practice! Joe has asked for at least 4-5 hours with us to get everyone enough practice time that they show noticeable development of their skill at "sticking" the knives. (I myself spent at least that many with him one-on-one, and I can attest to the fact that we'll want that much time to improve. It's not as easy as it looks!) Combine that with the whips and the fire arts, and this is definitely going to be 5 or so hours of active involvement.

Safety notice:
If you intend to touch the whips, you must bring eye protection and a brimmed hat. These things can hit you fast and hard by accident, especially when you're learning, and this is a necessary precaution to protect your head. Sturdy clothes (got a canvas or leather jacket?) might also be a good idea, to decrease the damage if (when) you do smack yourself with the tip of a whip.

Snacks and water will be provided. Class is capped at 25 people -- first 25 to pay, go!

we will set up a meeting point so that we can consolidate cars, the event will be at a private residence. it is reachable by the r5, ask me how! jon
