Description: This is a great way to experience history in our fair city. Think it is weird to tour a cemetery? Laurel hill is a true necropolis. Some mausoleums here are probably bigger and nicer than many center city apartments.
Laurel Hill was the first American cemetery designed by an architect and the inhabitants were constantly competing to see who could have the best digs. It is also the first cemetery to be named a National Historic Landmark. Many of the graves here were created by master sculptors.
Perhaps the most poignant monument is a statue of a mother holding her infant twins. It was carved by her husband and the twins' father, Henry Dmoghowski-Saunders, a Polish sculptor whose busts of Thaddeus Kosciuszko and Casimir Pulaski are on display in the U.S. Capitol. What is left of the inscription reads ?We Should Count Time in Heart Throbs. He Most Lives who Thinks Most. Feels the Nobelest. Acts the Best.?
Come be inspired with us in the beauty of Philadelphia ?s landmark necropolis.
